Meet our writers
Nika Beauchamp
Nika writes and reports environmental stories for Vital Signs. Based in St. Louis, Missouri, she can often be found exploring local parks with her two young children. When time allows, she translates graphic novels from German for publishers including Fantagraphics and New York Review Books. Her translations have won praise from the Guardian and Publishers Weekly, and her writing has appeared in Grist, Common Dreams, Narratively, and other outlets.
Jordon Brown
If you read an article on this site, Jordon probably published it. He is a PhD dropout, whose writing was published in Social Media + Society, Journal of Sports Media and more. Jordon lives just outside of Austin and loves comic books, hanging out with his wife and kids, and fighting his lactose intolerance.
Tom Clynes
Tom is an award-winning journalist whose curiosity has taken him to some of the world's most intriguing places. He covers adventurous science, environmental issues and human rights for publications that include National Geographic, Nature, The New York Times, Scientific American and Spectrum. His books include Wild Planet and The Boy Who Played With Fusion.
Joanna Foster
Joanna's background is in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. But a few close encounters with safari ants while living in East Africa helped steer her away from field biology to a career in science journalism. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Climate Progress, Grist and Mother Jones.
Liz Galst
Liz shepherds Vital Sign’s Go Green section. Besides hanging out with her kids and trying — unsuccessfully — to teach her dog to fetch, swimming in crystal-clear lakes is her big thing. She has written for The New York Times, The Boston Globe, New York and Newsweek, and won awards from the Association for Women in Communications and NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists.
Shanti Menon
Shanti has been a science and environmental writer for more than 25 years. Her work has appeared in Discover, Salon, Yoga Journal and many other publications. She lives in New York City and enjoys leaving.
Leslie Von Pless
Leslie is an award-winning filmmaker and photographer, focusing on social justice and environmental stories for nearly 20 years. Her films have been screened in over 50 film festivals worldwide, and have received a range of recognition from grand jury awards to Telly awards and a coveted Vimeo Staff Pick. Her videos and photography have been published in Fast Company, The Washington Post, People Magazine, books, pop-up museum exhibits, and beyond. Leslie is an avid scuba diver, intrepidly diving in her home waters off the coast of Long Island, NY, and volunteers as an underwater photographer for community groups working to restore local ecosystems.
Mohammad Shahhosseini
Mohammad is an award-winning filmmaker based in Connecticut. He works with moving pictures. When he’s not behind the camera or at his computer, he’s either cooking in the kitchen or out for a run. His work has earned numerous awards, including Telly Awards, W3 Awards, and Collision Awards, as well as recognition from the Texas Film Festival and the United Nations Foundation.
