    # Catching Data: How Bahamian fishers help forecast stronger storms

Film by Leslie Von Pless As climate change fuels more extreme weather, the Atlantic hurricane season is stretching longer each year—and the storms themselves are becoming more powerful. Yet meteorologists still lack the near-shore ocean data needed to accurately forecast these increasingly unpredictable systems.

Small boats and fishing vessels working in coastal waters could help fill this critical data gap. In The Bahamas, small-scale fishers like Osbourne Stuart have witnessed firsthand the devastation hurricanes can bring. By “Catching Data,” he’s helping generate the information his community needs to better prepare for the stronger storms ahead.
